C.O.G 100 Event Details, Rules, And Registration Details

Event Details

The C.O.G. 100 is a single speed bicycle event scheduled for (TBA- Stay Tuned for an announcement for 2020). This page will serve as a reference for event participants regarding exactly what to expect if you are riding in the C.O.G. 100.
  • Single Speed Only: This event was created for the single speeder. Geared bikes will not be permitted to be used in any fashion. See the "Event Rules" below for a definition of what constitutes a bicycle permitted for use in the C.O.G. 100.
  • Self-Navigated: The event course will not be marked. It will be an event held on Public Roads and all Traffic, County, and State laws applicable to Public Roads must be observed and adhered to by event participants. (Stopping at stop signs, riding on the right side of the road, etc) Navigation will be by cue sheet only. There will be no GPS/online route to download.
  • Self-Supported: This event will be self-supported. Riders must carry all necessary water and food to complete the 100 mile course. There will be no aid station, and there will be no on-course aid given to any rider by anyone other than local residents when asked by an event participant. (See "Event Rules" for clarification)
  • Single Speed Championship: The C.O.G. 100 is not a sanctioned event by any authorized entity. This is an event declaring it will crown a "Single Speed Gravel" champion. There is no affiliation, implied directly or indirectly to any known cycling association, governing body, or entity.  We're doing this for fun and for the challenge of it. That said, specific rules apply to gain the "Iowa Single Speed Gravel Champion" tag. See "Event Rules" for more.
  • The Course: The course for the C.O.G. 100 will be a loop style course primarily on the gravel roads around Grinnell, Iowa. The event's course will originate and terminate at Ahrens Park on the Northeast side of Grinnell, Iowa. There will be one distance of a 100-ish (may be a bit longer due to logistics) miles to be ridden. Expect steep hills and lots of them. While Level B roads exist around Grinnell, due to the timing of this event they will most likely not be a part of the C.O.G. 100's course. Late March will almost guarantee a muddy mess of a road. That said, we're not totally discounting the use of a Level B road. Just don't expect much more than a mile or two of that. There may be a small amount of pavement due to running through a small town or village, but otherwise expect the course to be 95%+ gravel.
  • Time Stamp:  Stay tuned.....
  • Prizing: There may be a prize or two tossed your way, but don't expect anything. This event isn't about a trophies, prize purses or schwag handouts.  Two Championship Jerseys will be awarded to the Male and Female winners.
Event Rules
  1.   The Golden Rule. The sponsors, organizers, and anyone having anything to do with this event are NOT responsible for your safety. Think of this event as a 100 mile hard training ride. We can't say this enough.....YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU!
  2. The C.O.G. 100 is a non-stop, self-supported, solo competition along the gravel roads of rural Iowa. Competitors must carry with them ALL necessary equipment.
  3. Each rider is considered to be on a private excursion and remains solely responsible for any accidents in which he or she may be involved. No responsibility can be accepted for riders becoming lost or stranded.
  4. Prearranged outside support is not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to assistance with navigation, delivery of supplies, mechanical support, or encouragement/cheering.
  5. Competitors may not advance on the route by any means other than bicycling or in the case of a mechanical, by foot.
  6. Competitors may, in the case of emergency, mechanical or other unforeseeable problems, be assisted by motorized transport. By accepting motorized transport you will automatically relinquish your standing in the event.
  7. The primary event route must be followed at all times. No short cuts or alternate routes are permitted.
  8. "Single speed bicycle" is defined as a bicycle which has a drive train consisting of a chain,  ONE CHAIN RING and ONE REAR COG*. Riders wishing to use a geared type bike must modify it by have the shifters removed, cassette/free wheel removed, and no front derailleur mounted. A rear derailleur can be used as a tensioner, but there can be no cable running to it. "Singulator" type tensioning devices are permitted. All riders must start and finish on the same gear. So, that means don't stick 10 assorted freewheels/track cogs in your bag. *You CAN run a flip-flop hub, but both gears (freewheel & cog) must have the same number of teeth. ALL BIKES ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE WORKING FRONT AND REAR BRAKES FOR SAFETY!
  9. You are completely on your own. Use your head. Look and yield for traffic. There will be no course marshalls to hold up traffic. Don't be a dumbass!
  10. Riders must wear an ANSI or Snell approved helmet, must obey city, county and state laws and Rules of the Road, and conduct themselves in a manner that will not bring discredit to the event.
  11. No GPS Systems allowed for navigation. GPS's are allowed for personal data and recording your ride.
  12. Racers can help other racers with mechanical support. We are not doing this event to leave someone out in the boonies of Iowa.
  13. If you exit the course for food, supplies, or any other reason, You must re-enter in the same spot in which you left. Got it?!
  14. Due to ever evolving "technology" it has to be said now that no electric assist, nor anything other than a 100% human powered, two wheeled vehicle is allowed to be used at C.O.G. 100
  15.   Participants must remain within the primary boundaries of the roadway at all times. If the roadway is bordered by fences or ditches, riders must stay between them. If the roadway is in open range, stay on the roadway. Leaving the roadway or climbing over a fence is considered short cutting the course and will result in disqualification. Likewise, trespassing on private land is also grounds for disqualification and and consequences resulting in trespassing are the sole responsibility of the rider in question.
  16. A "support" person is strongly advised for event participants to participate in the C.O.G.100 as a means to get an event participant off course in case of an emergency, injury, or abandonment of the event. The C.O.G. 100 is NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU, so you should have a means of getting off the course available to you if you decide to participate in this event. Riders are allowed to assist each other in event of poor weather or emergency.

The intent of these rules is to establish an equal and fair opportunity for all racers.
